Economy 

The main industries are fishing, tourism, shipping and commerce. The proportion of contribution by these activities to the GDP distribution (19.1 %), Tourism (17.8 %), fisheries (11.8 %), Construction (9.1 %) and Government administration (9.0 %).  

During the past five years, the GDP has grown at a steady rate. The GDP estimated at RF 1,048.1 Million in 1991, had grown to Rf 1,121 by 1992 and RF 1,190 million in 1993 (at 1985 constant prices)   The ‘per capita GDP’  RF 4,857 (US$ 684) in 1992 and RF 4,993 (US$ 703) in 1993. The average growth rate was 6.2% from 1992 to 1993.  

Despite the small size, the economy has been growing rapidly and has largely transformed the traditional economic life of subsistence agriculture and fishing. The growth is led by the expansion in tourism and developments in the fishing industry.
